CHAPTER 10

“What’s the plan now?” Latoya asked as she sat on the bed holding a cold rag on her arm to stop the bleeding.

“The hell if I know.” Rondell stated looking in the mirror nursing his cuts.

“You have to go further than Canada. Then, wherever y’all go, y’all gonna have to be careful there as well. You never know when they’re gonna come looking for you.” Rosalind warned them from the bed, flipping through channels on the television.

They were in a hotel room on the other side of the falls. After deciding that taking them back to hide in her room was too risky, Rosalind had them get inside the trunk to get pass border patrol without any hassle. The three of them checked inside a room at a small motel after the short drive to Buffalo.

“The train stations, airports, and bus stations are being watched. How are we gonna get anywhere without being spotted?” Latoya asked no one particularly.

Rondell shrugged as he idly stared out the window into the parking lot. The rain came down hard as he watched crackles of lightning in the sky. He didn’t have any answers for Latoya, but he was determined to come up with something. He stood and thought quietly to himself.

Rosalind watched Latoya pace back and forth. “There’s got to be a way for y’all to get across water without being detected.”

“How?” Latoya stopped and stared at Rosalind waiting for an answer.

“We can take our chances making it to the border in Mexico.” Rondell walked from the window and sat down on the bed.

“Yeah, that sounds like just about the only option y’all have. You have to watch it though. Just like them police in Canada got the heads- up. The ones in Mexico can too.”

“Yeah, I know,” Latoya listened to them halfway as she tuned in on the news that aired on the television. “Turn that up, Ros, they talking about Rochester.”

Rosalind and Rondell immediately turned there heads toward the television set. The reporter spoke in a wired tone. “The streets of Rochester have become murderous in the past few weeks and city officials are taking notice to the rise of violence. Two weeks ago June Sosa and his younger brother Alex Sosa were murdered days apart.”

“Those were my boys,” Rondell said dryly as he watched the news show flashbacks of both murder scenes.

“Oh, my God!” Rosalind cried. “Both of them are dead. He had stopped by my house to ask me a few questions the day after his brother was killed.”

“Hey, I do remember him.” Latoya added as they showed a picture of June and his brother Scrap side by side.

The reporter continued. “Days after those two homicides, fifty three year old Dean Johnson was found shot to death on Rochester’s Westside.”

“Dean Johnson?” Latoya repeated. Her head instantly began to pound and she was praying her ears weren’t hearing correct. Her daddy just couldn’t be dead; he just couldn’t be, thought Latoya. Shortly, her thoughts were confirmed when they displayed Dean’s picture across the screen.
